The Lake District

This page has information on The Lake District in the County of Cumbria, North West England, UK.

The Lake District is also known as Lakeland or The Lakes. It is a rural area in Northwest England and is a popular holiday destination thanks to its famous lakes and mountains (or fells). It has strong links with early 19th century poetry and writing by William Wordsworth and the Lake Poets.

The central and most popular part of the area with tourists is within the Lake District National Park - one of 14 National Parks in the UK. It lies entirely within Cumbria, and is one of few mountainous regions within England. All the land in England higher than 3000 feet above sea level is within the National Park, including Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain.
